No digital photo camera produces the beautiful square image format out of the box. Even the newest MF Digital Backs produce rectangle images. The difference between those worlds is that all Full-Frame or APS-C Format DSLR`s have the 3:2 image format and  MF Digital Backs/Cameras, like Hasselblad, PhaseOne or Leaf or capture the 4:3 image format.  This is due to the old film/slide format of 36mm x 24mm (for SLR`s) and 60mm x 45mm (for MF Cameras). So the old image formats from the 20th century went nearly 1:1 into the digital cameras.

The beautiful, classical 60mm x 60mm MF Format was dropped in the evolution of digital cameras as there is unfortunatly no “square digital sensor” available in the market. So cropping is as of today the only way to get the beautiful square format. And this has to be done on your computer after the image is already captured. I really would like to see a kind of viewfinder or focus-screen addition for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Leica etc. or the MF camera bodies which shows me only a square (or at least the borders of a square) in the viewfinder. That would be so useful for the composition while shooting an image and I can`t imagine that this might be “rocket-science” to develop. If you know where to get such a viewfinder screen or another good solution to see “the square” while taking the photo drop my an e-mail.

In the meantime Lightroom, Photoshop or Phocus have to do the job after the shot. In my iStockphoto Portfolio you find nearly 700 Squares.

The Free Photo of the Week is one of my very, very FIRST shots with the new Hasselblad H3D-II 50 camera I bought 8 weeks ago. I had and have to learn again to get ‘blindly’ used to this camera system (it`s really a bit different). I also have to adjust my workflow with the monster files of 280-320 MB for 1(!) 16Bit TIFF the hasselblad H3D-II 50 body captures.

But with every new shooting session I`m getting more and more used to it – to shot as ‘blind-natural’ as with my Canon 1D MK III Body (which I still need for people, action shots and low light). I will soon write some more words about the camera and my new workflow.  I`m used to work with the combination Lightroom 2.x together with Photoshop CS4, that’s the reason why I had to implement the Hasselblad RAW converter Phocus 1.02 software into my existing Canon workflow. Neither Lightroom 2.x nor Photoshop CS4 can open the *.3FR or *.FFF RAW files the Hasselblad Digital Backs produce. (No matter if your using the 22MP/31MP/39MP/50MP Backs).

You might of course do every tweak within Phocus 1.02 (it`s really like lightroom), but as I have a lot of individual presets (and more automated scripts)  in my lightroom 2.x programm folder (AND: i`m still using the workflow Lightroom 2.X+CS4 for the photos with  my Canon 1Ds MK III), there has to be a step in between..

I will write a short wrap up of my personal workflow to be able to have H3D-II & Canon 1Ds Images together in one Lightroom Collection. One thing for sure is that you will need more Harddisk Space with the ‘Hassi’. And I mean ALOT of Hardisk space.

To give you a short overview:

HDD Space for 1 H3D-II 50MPixel Shot in my Workflow:

  • 74.3  MB – *.3FR File (Compressed H3D-II RAW File shot on the CF Card)
  • 84.8  MB – *.FFF File (Uncompressed RAW File H3D-II after importing (extracting) the *.3FR File into Phocus 1.02
  • 286.9 MB – *.TIFF File 16 BIT (after you export a *.FFF into 16 BIT TIFF)
  • 290.9 MB – *-2.TIFF File 16 BIT, Adobe RGB (This is the second version of the TIFF, with Retouching, Sensorspot Removal, Photoshop (or Lightroom) Adjustments as a 1 Layer Version. (Don`t think about saving a TIFF with 3-4 Layers as this will multiply the Filesize)
  • 40.2 MB – *.JPG File 8 BIT, Adobe RGB to upload to e.g. iStockphoto.

If you like to backup every ‘working step’ you might end up with around 777.1 MB Data for each photo…. Wow. You can of course drop the *.3FR File after importing it (it`s just the compressed CF-Card Version of the *.FFF Raw File), so you could save at least 74.3 MB, but hey, that`s just 10% of the total…

Another possible way is to import *.DNG Files (*.FFF Files can be converted to Adobe DNG out ouf Phocus 1.02) into Lightroom 2.x. But during the conversion from *.FFF to *.DNG you lose the special Hasselblad RAW Algorithms (which optimise Moire, Distorion, Vignetting, Fringing and more optical faults for each lens individually) – Not Good.

So the ‘large’ TIFF Step is in my opinion a ‘must’. As far as I know this detour is not intentional from Hasselblad – not be able to convert their ‘secret formulas’ into the DNG – it`s more the limitation of the DNG container (and ACR Interpreter) itself which prevents special Phocus Raw Tweaks to be included into a *.DNG file. I really hope that in the future there might be a better HDD and time saving solution…but as of today the way over TIFF is a must. Some might think ‘why 16Bit’ and not ‘8 Bit’ TIFF files to save space. This really depends on what your shooting. The bigger range of 16BIT simply gives you more tweaking freedom in CS4 or Lightroom. If you don`t need that, work with the 8Bit Tiff`s – but for me 16 BIT is again a ‘must’ until the final conversion to a 8Bit *.JPG.

There has been a lot of discussions between contributers recently about the new microsite www.istockcharts.de. This Website gives an overview of Total Downloads, Downloads within a certain amount of time and much more informations (all sortable) of istockphoto contributers.

All those informations about istock contributers are and have been public since years. Multimedia.de meshed those informations together into sneaky, naughty little website. Meanwhile contributers which don`t want to be on the list can opt-out of it, then they appear as ‘anonymous’ there. But why should contributers opt-out? The Top Contributers there are already very well known and some of them even promote their “Ranking Positions” on their own websites or blogs.

In my opinion those opting-out are a littly ‘sissy’ or ‘chickenhearted” as their informations could be found elswhere like in ‘Duncan1890’sBlog, istockphoto TOP 1000 Contributers and the different contributers can even be compared like on the website of www.istock-apps.com (You need an iStockphoto account to log-in)

So try it out and make up your own opinion, it might be an inspiration for you find the next stock photography shooting stars there.

I will be this time at the Photokina Cologne 2008 to get an impression and first view on the new products the camera manufacturers announced during the last days in their pre-photokina press releases. The specifications of the new Canon 5D Mark II really sound promising. A camera with 21.1 Megapixel, ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to ISO 50-25600) for approx. 2700 US$ – really cool. The main point for me to decide if I get one of those Canon 5D Mark II bodies as a second camera (I shoot with the 1Ds Mark III as of today) is the new introduced 1080p HD video functionality. If this new Canon 5D Mark II DSLR camera can produce good quality Video Footage Clips in 1080p, i think it will change a lot in the whole stock video footage market as photographers might start taking videoclips in the near future. An interesting development. I`m more then curious about what will be next in a future Canon 1Ds Mark IV. But we all have to wait a while for this next 1Ds step I guess.

There are also big news from other brands. Especially the new Leica S System announcement sound phantastic. 37 Mega Pixel, just a bit less than the hasselblad H3D-II 39, together with a new lens system. Wow. But: I`m sure the price of this Leica DSLR monster will calm me down very quick…

Finally I keep dreaming for an Hasselblad H3D II 50 MPixel….

Last week I returned from a short one week trip to Seattle, Washington, USA. Between the 8th and 10th August the first istockphoto Diamondlypse took place in Seattle. The list of diamond contributers attending this istockalypse was really a kind of ‘who is who’ of the istockphoto community. It’ now close six months ago since the last update of Sold & Found on my photoblog.

I got again emails and sitemails (in istockphoto) that people found some of my images in use. So again: thanks for letting me know. And thanks to all people sending me prints, copies etc.

Episode IV Mlenny Porfolio in Action Summer 2008:

So here are the new sold & found images from my istock portfolio:

I really was surprised when Adobe announced the public beta of lightroom 2.0. As I work a lot with the combination adobe photoshop cs 3 & lightroom 1.41 i’d liked to try out this beta version.. so I went to the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Learning Center. And what ??? I first thought I have a cache problem in my browser when I discovered 4 Images it made on the homepage of the Adobe Photoshop Learning Center Lightroom 2.0… but it was true. Out of a total of five images their designers choosed four images from my istockphoto portfolio. wow. You can see the screenshot above. Just click on the thumbs if you like to enlarge them. Below are the original images from my portfolio.

Meanwhile Adobe Lightroom 2.0 is released. And even after the release (and redesign/update of the learning center content) there is still one image left :-) one I image from my trip to the Sahara Desert. It`s really funny be surprised by such discoveries.

Transcend, the well-known Memory Card Manufacturer from Taipei, used an image of a couple as a flyer/folder whitch was included in their new 16 GB CF card. Thanks Thomas (!) for sending me the Transcend 16 GB brochure and package! But why didn`t you leave the 16GB in the letter? :-)

Börse Online is a well-known weekly Economy/Stock magazin in Germany. In an article about Wind Power Companies & Alternative Energy Investments they used one of my wind turbine images.

A shot from the hey jo club, london was used in a party – event community.

A portrait of two young women from barcelona made it onto this advertising banner in usa. Thanks for mailing me this image!

This fairy-tale portrait was used as the cover image of the american Afra Victoria Magazin on their June/July 2008 Issue.

Lightroomkillertips, the lightroom tips & tricks blog from Matt Kloskowski, used my ‘endless road’ shot from nambia. Check out his blog it`s worth reading!

One shot from Namibia was used by Yahoo Travel. This time not an endless road. The shot (above , right) of the Skeleton Coast in West Namibia was taken out of a cessna airplane.

The Indian Chief Portrait, which was shot in Austin, Texas – made it onto the Cover of the Western Group Tour Magazine in the Spring 2008 Issue.

I discovered another CD Cover from the shooting session i had in the Hey Jo Club in London, UK. It was used for the CD Sampler Electronic House Sessions Volume 2.

This Fashion shot (on the right) was used on the website of ‘Les Cours Mont-Royal‘. The famous Montreal Fashion Boutique Shopping Center in Canada.

Strobbe is a belgian distributer of office accessoires. I shot the image of a young woman running along a moving stairway in the barcelone airport. It’s used on their website and also as the cover of their Strobbe Order Catalog 2008/2009.

KSL.com, Utah’s News and Information Plattform used one of my images of a screaming business man (original on the right) as an online banner to promote their Online Education Center.

The image on the right was shot in Ljubljana. The Group Shot of those women was used from the company X4 Tech. I found it included in their products X4-Tech Zelo T10 on Amazon.de.

One of my car details was used as the cover for the traditional Mayer Brown Event at INTA 2008 Invitation Cards. The Mayer Brown LLC (Intellectual Property Group) event took place in the ‘Meilenwerk Berlin‘.
